Gator Buddha

Our canna lily bloomed yesterday, the first flower we've seen from it this year. The poor thing isn't exactly thriving -- where it once had multiple stalks, now there's only one -- but considering I bought it on a whim at the florist five years ago and wasn't sure it would live beyond one season, it's done amazingly well. It probably needs a new pot and some fresh soil.

We finally harvested some tomatoes! Dave picked these two yesterday morning. They're a little on the mealy side, honestly, but I still enjoyed mine because we grew it!

We spent yesterday entirely at home. In fact I put the yard waste out for collection in the evening and found the door still locked and chained -- or "ginked," as my dad used to say when I was a child. We hadn't unlocked it from the night before. That shows how domestic we were!

I worked in the garden, trimming some stuff and trying to keep our paths reasonably clear, so we could get to the patio without being smacked in the face by the undergrowth like a character on "Gilligan's Island." And I did see a couple of those nasty little flower bugs that give me such terrible bites at this time of year. They're definitely out there.

I did laundry. I cleaned the bathrooms. I vacuumed. That kind of thing.

I also archived all my pictures and backed up my computer, which is always a process.

I know some of you watch the show "Poker Face," with Natasha Lyonne. I was watching the night before last, and it was a kind of Florida-Man-on-Steroids plot, involving a jealous police officer who spikes a fellow officer's pet alligator, Daisy, with methamphetamines. Daisy then kills her owner and becomes a hunted creature, and it's up to Natasha Lyonne's character to return her safely to the swamps. It was a fundamentally silly plot, making fun of those wild Florida Man news stories we often see.

Anyway, at one point Natasha's character, Charlie, peers into the gator's eyes and sees a sort of cosmic, psychedelic swirl suggesting that Daisy is an elevated spirit, perhaps a divine creature. The final frame in the psychedelic swirl is the image above, which I took from the TV screen because I love it so much. I'm not sure a more perfect image has ever been created to combine the Buddhist and Floridian threads in my own past.

Anyway, it's my Facebook profile image now. I'm waiting to see if anyone recognizes the source.

Dave, by the way, doesn't like "Poker Face." He has trouble with Natasha's gravelly voice. I think as a musician he just hears vocal cord damage and it sends him over the edge.

  1. That is a weird looking gator, but very colourful. I like it.

  2. Hmmm... if that alligator buddha is a representation of your psyche I shall need to rethink my image of you. 😳

  4. Is there a prize for guessing where your new Facebook profile picture comes from? It's Daisy from "Poker Face," with Natasha Lyonne! A voucher will do.

    1. You've probably heard her before in movies or on other shows. She has a characteristically gravelly voice.

  6. I love that profile picture! Haha! I tried to watch poker face, but I agree with Dave. I can't listen to that woman speak for long.

    1. It's so funny -- I don't even notice her voice. She's always been a favorite actress for me.

  10. Ginked? I've not heard of that word.
I'm sure the two tomatoes made a hardy meal for you both.
I'm afraid you lost me at Poker Face.

  11. I'm with Dave on the vocal frit issue. As a former singer, I hate to hear it. It's like using a fine piece of equipment as a hammer.
How come you were home Monday? Was it a holiday? They seem to have changed them since I grew up there, can't keep track.

    1. Until 1965 August Bank Holiday was the first Monday in August. It then changed to the last Monday where it has remained ever since.

  12. I love that gator! You know, we don't even have a chain for our door, but we do have a deadbolt. That we only ever lock at night or if we go out of town. Ha!

  13. I don't watch Poker Face as that actress is a bit annoying. I wondered about that alligator when I saw it on your Facebook... Now I know what the flower is that is blooming in a pot in my front yard - a calla lily - only mine is yellow.

    1. Well, there are calla lilies and canna lilies -- two different things. Ours is a canna. Calla lilies are the often white, goblet-shaped flowers that are frequently (but unfairly) associated with funerals.

You know- some people are just born with gravelly voices. Or husky voices. Think Demi Moore. I rather like Natasha but her shows haven't really excited me much. I did very much enjoy her performance on Orange is the New Black.

    1. I thought you might recognize it, because you've mentioned "Poker Face" before! Maybe you never got this far in the series. You should find this particular episode because, as a Floridian, you'd get a kick out of it. :)

  16. I agree. Any tomato or anything I grow is wonderful because I grew it -- even if it's a little less than the best! I don't know that show. Isn't there a term for that kind of voice? I'm thinking vocal fry but that might be wrong.

    1. Yes, vocal fry is correct. (Not sure about the spelling.)

  18. Can't comment on Poker Face, as I know nothing about it, but I want to comment on your previous post. You say that nobody challenged you about your reading a book about ABBA. Well, why would anyone challenge you about that? What's wrong or weird about it? I honestly don't get it. Nobody has ever challenged me when I posted about documentaries I'd been watching on Netflix, for instance on Wham!, Shania Twain, Madness, Quincy Jones, J. Lopez and others, or when I posted reviews of books about Alan Rickman, Tom Felton, Michelle Obama or Stephanie Powers.
I'd love to read the ABBA book!

    1. In the United States, certainly among people of my age group, ABBA could be considered at best a guilty pleasure. Most people seem to regard them as superficial and glitzy (like that's a bad thing!). I think they're a classic example of musicians who seem to be doing something simple but that's actually quite complex and very polished.

    2. Thank you for explaining this to me, Steve. ABBA a guilty pleasure? They had a very different standing here in Germany (and probably across most of Europe) back in the day, and even nowadays, there are many people of all ages who unashamedly profess their love of their music. Play "Dancing Queen" or any other ABBA song at any event, and a full dance floor is guaranteed, with everyone singing along at the top of their lungs :-D

  19. We've never seen it. It was recommended to us but we couldn't watch if for whatever reason I don't remember now.

It's the dog days here. Nothing is growing.

  20. Growing your own tomatoes is not easy. At least you got a harvest. Many years ago, my father and uncle grew tomatoes without any problems, and the harvest was always huge. I keep trying largely without great success.
I've not seen the show. Voices can grate so it might not be the show for me.
Buddhist allegator is a first for me. My garden buddha is quite ordinary in comparison.

    1. It seems like many people are faced with a feast-or-famine situation when it comes to growing tomatoes.

  23. Do you think the tomatoes might be a bit mealy because they over-ripened on the vine? They sure are pretty and yes, what we grow ourselves always tastes extra good!

    1. Maybe, but honestly I have no idea. I am not a tomato expert! Dave wanted to wait until they were redder and came off the stem easily.

  24. We just finished watching "Orange is the New Black" and I loved Natasha Lyonne's character. She's had an interesting life.
I've been picking my tomatoes as they ripen, but I must say, mine have done much better. I was complaining because I didn't have many, but two. That's tough.

    1. Yes, she's terrific! I've enjoyed her in pretty much everything I've seen her in. She's like Chloe Sevigny -- she has a very interesting screen presence.

  25. Many people have recommended that show to me, but I don't have the streaming service it's on. Very typical these days. :( I refuse to pay any more for TV although I've been watching more and more of it. I love the flavor of home grown tomatoes although they do sometimes have tough skins.

    1. I agree with being selective about streaming services. It would be too easy to find yourself with 20 different subscriptions! We just have Netflix, Amazon Prime, NOW TV (which I think is a UK thing, not sure what the counterpart is in the states) and Apple TV.
