A Skiing Flamingo

I restocked the bird feeders yesterday morning and the parakeets and starlings were on the suet balls within minutes. In fact, I don't think I made it back inside before they showed up. Maybe it's hard to find food at this time of year. Anyway, I saw six parakeets on the feeder at once, which might be an all time record.

They're quite aggressive with each other and there's always a lot of snapping and jockeying for position. The one above kept nipping the tailfeathers of one of its pals, and held on even when the other bird took flight! Fortunately it promptly let go and the feather didn't come out.

In mid-morning I made a rare trip to the post office to mail a letter. I haven't used snail mail in an age and didn't have a stamp -- didn't even know how much one would cost, to be honest. Fortunately that problem was easily solved with some spare change retrieved from our dusty coin bowl.

There was some kind of holiday market on West End Green and I briefly wandered through, but I'm not really buying gifts this year so I didn't purchase anything. I did, however, stop in at the plant shop to buy...

...a wreath for our front door. Pretty nice, huh? I thought it was festive without all the red-ribbons-and-pine that we traditionally see at Christmas. Something different.

At a nearby bulk foods store I picked up a felted skiing flamingo. Because everybody needs one! Don't ask me why the bulk foods store was selling flamingoes because I haven't a clue. As far as I could see they had no other felted items on hand.

Oh, and I impulsively got both a flu shot and a Covid booster. I happened to walk past a pharmacy that was advertising them, and thought, "Why not?" After all we're going to be traveling soon and I'll be visiting some older and vulnerable people in Florida, so it would be good to take precautions. I probably should have done it weeks ago but I just didn't think that far ahead. Normally our school provides flu shots for staff and faculty but if we were offered one this year I missed it somehow, and the flu is going around.  My Covid arm is sore this morning -- the flu arm less so -- but otherwise I feel pretty normal.

I asked the pharmacist whether it was a good idea to get both shots at once. "It's recommended, actually," he said. OK then.

The rest of the day was filled with minor tasks. I trimmed some dead stuff out of the garden, raked some leaves and filled a yard waste bag. I watered all the houseplants. I cleaned and vacuumed.

And I edited this week's garden cam footage! The resulting video is very short. I had quite a few clips but most of them weren't very good. I'd returned the camera to the back of the garden, but I put it in a bad place -- too close to a pile of leaves, which reflected back so much light that everything beyond it was lost in darkness. Also, there's a very intrusive stick in the way -- in real life it looks like nothing, but on the camera it looks HUGE.

So, anyway, bad positioning aside, here's what we've got:
-- We start out with Pale Cat, who wanders around and then jumps the back wall. This is how all the animals get in and out of the garden, by jumping over the walls or fences.
-- At 00:23, we have a wary fox, followed by a couple more.
-- At 01:18, a squirrel is packing dry leaves into its mouth and running off with them. Building a nest, I guess?
-- At 01:48 we get a great view of a fox. I came out the back door and startled it lurking in some shrubbery. It ran to the back of the garden and stopped right in front of the camera, stared at me for a long while and then jumped over the fence.
-- At 02:08, another fox goes by, then wanders off behind the shed.

  1. Oh, I sooo want to stroke that fox's lovely fur!! A special treat, to see it up so close and standing still for a bit.

Getting your flu and Covid shots is very sensible. As you say, you are going to see vulnerable people, and you certainly do not want to endanger them. Here, Covid and flu are making the rounds; my American friends (Mum, Dad, two daughters of 7 and 9 years) are planning to fly to the US on the 22nd to spend Christmas with their families there, but now the mother and the older daughter have caught COVID - and it looks like the entire family is coming down with it; it's nearly impossible to isolate one half of the family when there are children involved and you live in a regular sized flat. I hope they'll be fit for travelling when the time comes.
Some years ago, I had both flu and COVID jabs at the same time, offered by my employer. This year, they only offered flu; maybe I should book a COVID one with the nearby pharmacy who offer it.

The wreath is beautiful - all natural materials of this season.

    1. If you stroked its fur, it would probably bite you. :) But yes, I enjoyed that close-up view a lot.

This year I had to pay for both my flu and Covid shots but I felt it was worth it!

  2. Very wise, protecting others as well as yourself.
That is a beautiful wreath..and the flamingo? Everyone needs a bit of fun!!

  3. Gorgeous wreath. Trail cams are putting people in touch with wildlife that many never dreamed were cavorting in their backyards at night. We just get rabbits and quails.

    1. Quail are good to see, though. They are a struggling species in many areas because, as ground nesters, they are vulnerable.

  4. I like your wreath, and I guess it will be used next year.
The skiing flamingo is ugly enough to be cute.
I liked the squirrel with leaves in its mouth.

    1. The wreath is natural so I think it will be done after this season. It's not one we can keep for next year, sadly!

  5. Everyone needs a skiing flamingo at Christmas.

  6. A great view of the fox at 1:48! Your wreath is a beauty. I definitely would have bought a skiing flamingo. And that shot of the parakeets is a wonder!

    1. I wish I'd had the camera shifted slightly to the left for the parakeet shot, to get the other bird better in the frame, but oh well!

  7. I must say that that is a fine looking wreath Steve. It must have cost a pretty penny but I guess that on a school librarian's generous salary you can easily afford such luxuries.

    1. It was £15, which I didn't think was too outrageous.

  8. Your wreath is gorgeous. I admit to buying flamingo decorations; I would definitely have gotten that one. They remind me of Florida and my parents.

    1. We really should get some plastic flamingos for our garden! They could represent my Florida roots. :)

  9. We went to a Christmas Market in town yesterday and the wreaths one vendor had were cheesy and cheap. I would have loved to find one like yours!
And I instantly cleaned my glasses after reading that you bought a "felled" flamingo as I tried to figure out how it fell.

    It's early here .

  10. Smart move on the Covid and flu shots, especially with the vulnerables in mind and plane travel. It's raging in various areas and airports seem to be easy transmittal places with people from everywhere. I am wildly in love with your gorgeous wreath and the skiing flamingo. Wonderful additions to your world!

    1. Yeah, I figured a vaccine certainly couldn't hurt, though ideally I should have gotten it a couple of weeks ago.

    1. Yes, he got his early in the fall. He gets them from the NHS because his immune system is compromised by the drugs he takes for Crohn's. I, on the other hand, have to pay for mine!

I also like the way that fox just sort of melted into the darkness. Almost magical.

    1. They really are quite wily, those foxes. I can see why foxes are usually depicted as clever.

    2. After our debacle with the fox and our chickens and our fruitless effort to trap it, I now also understand their reputation. They are wily AND sly. And smart, too. Dammit.

  13. You wreath is very nice. Your flamingo is fun. What will you do if they demand to examine your social media upon arrival? Would you turn it over?

    1. I still don't understand how that's supposed to work. Would I submit a list of every site where I have a profile? Who's going to look at all that stuff?

I'm hoping I won't get hit with that requirement because I'm a citizen, not a visitor seeking a visa. But who knows.

  14. The tail holding parakeet is a hoot! The wreath is so very seasonal and perfect!
    I love that skiing flamingo!🦩

  15. Great shot of the parakeet. And I love the wreath precisely because it does not scream christmas.

Is that a gate/doors between those two green columns to the alley behind your garden?

    1. The green & white thing is a building -- a shed where we keep our lawn mower. (And our dahlias in winter!) We do not have an alley behind us.

  18. Great set of photos today. I absolutely LOVE the wreath. It's exactly what I've been looking for and haven't yet found. I have a wreath but I haven't put it up yet. I'm kind of tired of it so I haven't been motivated. I love the skiing flamingo too. That's something you don't see very often or at all.

  19. That wreath is magnificent, no other word for it. We fill the bird feeders and the starlings come and decimate them within minutes, leaving none for any of the other birds. At least your parakeets are pretty to look at. :-)

    1. Yeah, we get the starlings too. They're entertaining just because they make such a racket! We get fewer of them in winter than in summer.

  20. Best wreath I have ever seen! So good, so Pagan! I love it! Going to florida...I don't love that- coming to the states is not the best holiday I can think of especially since there are other options at your doorstep "family, friends" I understand...Sunshine , Iget that too, but The USA sucks Donkeys big time! You are aware- I would boycott the states if I could but I LIVE here, unfortunately and Dennis is not going to budge. Have a merry Krimbo- that wreath just knocks me out!

  21. The parkettes are seriously competitive when it comes to your feeder. 6 vying for food must have been fun to watch.
Your garden is thriving with wildlife, and the fox does steal the show!
You purchased the best wreath I've seen in a very long time. Gorgeous. Nice choice.
Ms./Mr. skiing Flamingo is fun and joyful.

  23. I've gotten both shots together for the last few years and added the (one time) RSV shot this year. The wreath is beautiful! Squirrels can build pretty impressive and durable nests.

  25. I got both shots nearly two months ago. I didn’t ask about the advisability of doing both at once. I am just too lazy to schedule two appointments.

    1. I don't know why it seemed weird to get two shots at once. I guess a lot of vaccines are given that way. (Sometimes in the same needle!)

  27. I always get covid and flu shots together. This year there are far too many people her in Australia having the flu and being hospitalised, even small children, as people forget about the need for vaccinations. I like the flamingo.
