Yesterday morning was truly miserable weather-wise. It was cold and rainy, but thank goodness not snowy -- although one of my coworkers said she would have preferred snow to the blustery rain. We got some wind but nothing too severe. I don't know of any downed trees or other damage comparable to what Storm Goretti brought to other parts of England.
I put an extra strap of duct tape around the avocado and hoped for the best.
Tonight is supposed to be our last freezing night for a while. I think I can unwrap the avocado tomorrow and give the poor thing a week or two of fresh air, sunlight and moisture. I'll probably have to wrap it up again before winter is officially over, but coming from Florida, I find this perfectly normal winter gardening. We cover and uncover plants all the time in the American South, depending on what the weather does. Dave finds this rather mysterious and labor-intensive, but that's beause he's from Michigan, where no amount of covering will protect a plant from winter so they don't even bother.
Anyway, I did walk to work despite the weather, mostly because the Jubilee Line wasn't running. I had actually planned to take the tube but walking was forced upon me! (I could have ridden a bus but that takes ages. It's faster to walk.) On the positive side, the parent organization at the school gave us all hot chocolate when we arrived.

I feel like I should be writing something about the madness engulfing the USA's current government, but I'm just not sure what to say except this is NOT normal! And Americans can't allow it to become normal. This period of aggression against our allies, violence against our own citizens and others who are legally entitled to reside in the USA, international land and resource grabs, and glorified toxic masculinity is an outlier. We just have to get through it and survive it, which is not a foregone conclusion, and then we have an opportunity to right the ship. To the government and people of Denmark and Greenland and the rest of our NATO allies, I humbly apologize as an American citizen for my country treating you so awfully. I don't think this will last forever. Just treat us like we have gone temporarily insane -- keep your distance, try to avoid our flailing limbs and ravening jaws, and try not to take too much offense at the outbursts we seem unable to control.
The thing I don't understand about Trump's rhetoric on Greenland is, America already controls it -- jointly, through NATO. We (and Europe) are already responsible for its defense, there's an American military base there, and we are in a position to negotiate the use of its natural resources as needed. What does occupying it achieve?
As for the murder of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, it reminds me of the Kent State shooting in Ohio in 1970. Harmless protesters and trigger-happy, nervous gunmen are never a good mix, and the ICE agents shouldn't be there in the first place. Who are these guys who work for ICE? Who could do that in good conscience?

I cheated and used Google Lens to try to work out your pavement art. It suggested an Indian election boycott protest poster.
ReplyDeleteOh well.
Anyway, the world has definitely gone mad.
I wrote a lengthy comment yesterday on YP‘s blog about how I grew up in a Germany that admired and respected the USA. Right now, from a German-European perspective, one can‘t help to be VERY worried, and puzzled.
ReplyDeleteWalking to work and being welcomed with hot chocolate is not a bad start for the working day!

Where is my Avocado?
Should I say this, but, Hitler wanted to cleanse undesirables from his superior race and want to dominate the world, is the much of a difference.
ReplyDeleteAs a 'scroller' (sad creature emoji) What I have seen is hundreds of thousands of Americans protesting against the present regime. This regime in government (at the moment) are a handful of men just screwing the system for all its worth. They should be kicked out and there are a few signs that even their political party is sick of them.
ReplyDeleteSuch devoted care to your avocado tree, that is true love ;)
Codex: Hey. Not fair. I was struggling with autocorrect while Limbus and I posted at the same time.*sucks thumb*
ReplyDeleteOn a serious note. America doesn't control Greenland. It's a friendly base for strategic reasons. BUT. There are only 30000 people living there. This way there'd be no negotiation...
Thanks to Limbus and to you for the link, although I immediately felt like one of Pavlov’s dogs. Cankles doesn’t have enough understanding of the world to be doing all these things on his own. I wonder who is pushing his buttons. It’s terrifying. Your dedication to the avocado tree is admirable. I remember some neighbors wrapping their olive trees during the NYC winters. Your efforts are much bigger.
ReplyDeleteStephen Miller is the button pusher!
DeleteI side with Dave so the zone of not covering plants extends at least to southern Iowa.
ReplyDeleteI am a mixed bag as usual on your political comments. I don't agree with our actions in Venezuela without at least a blessing by the U.N. Even then, I don't think it was necessary to involve ourselves in another country's affairs when we can't solve our own. I came out as unconcerned about Trumps blathering about Greenland the first time around but am a bit more concerned this time around with Venezuela in our rear view mirror. As for the Good killing, I see plenty of blame to go around besides the obvious of the ICE agent Ross. I see a president who put ICE, not trained in dealing with hostile people, in this bad situation of having to do exactly what they weren't trained for leading to this sort of thing. I blame past administrations for ignoring our borders which lead to this sort of thing. I blame politicians and governors for trying to politicize it even more and in the case of governors dropping multiple f-bombs about it, lowering our standard of decorum in politics even further. I blame the media for over analyzing every single detail frame by frame with so called experts of a 10 second clip that we are now learning as the facts roll in was a much longer confrontation. This only whips up the hysteria that leads to these confrontations to begin with. Somehow we need to dial it back to some sort of balance like it used to be before where it gets reported but not speculated on. All this trickles down to people putting themselves in front of armed and poorly trained people trying to enforce laws that haven't been enforced to this extent and leading to deaths. Unfortunate but predictable.
It's dreadful here, every single day. And overwhelming b/c you feel so powerless. Schumer and Jeffries are literally useless. I'm pretty sure Trump's team already has a plan for Greenland. And god, I hope NATO/Europe steps up to stop it. Enough already of this insane man.
ReplyDeleteProject 2025 on steroids - Pushing the agenda as quickly as possible before their man is no longer able to be propped up- sprayed with color and moving his mouth. Trump ,coddled and mollified with ego projects and put in front of the camera only for show, Miller and the boys are running the country- that is obvious. Clearly in the post stroke, post covid dementia- trump is unwell- physically and obviously mentally. VAnce is doubling down with blatant shocking lies and acrimony to carry this country and allies over the cliff. Project 2025 wants the entire western part of globe under USA ownership only to strip natural resources, oil, minerals etc. A police state, civil war, as well as warring with all other nations except Russia and China. Laws/rules constitution no longer hold check on the madness that has come on at such mind numbing speed. Fear is the motivation of countries and industry, complying with trump's demands. No one has the balls to recognize and say NO to the Orange toddler with a gun...the USA military has buckled as well- and that is the last straw. Chaos and murder, bombings and relentless thievery of land is a given and an important part of the agenda. Denial and naivety , democracy and the belief that laws of the land will be adhered to have been used as smoke screen as Miller and the boys shred it all and move on with project 2025 full force. Especially now that trump is ailing and talking about going to heaven(?) Heather Cox Richardson delivers accurate accounts with historical perspective of this amazing time - the USA is a different country entirely. Denial , "hope" and disbelief that what is happening at a steady , rapid clip, the chaos , the madness, world upended. Fear rules. nations buckle . World order in flux - trump has been the perfect puppet for the job. Americans are no longer "WE" . Totalitarianism.
ReplyDeleteFox continues propaganda- still the most popular watch of the day in USA...Be glad that you and Dave made the choice to live in UK even though the weather sucks right now.
DeleteWe knew a version of this was coming if we read Project 2025. It's all there. In DT the P25 gang found a willing dupe, a puppet king, to carry the message. Flatter him, feed him the info, play to his passions and pretty soon, he's doing and saying what they want. Taking out DT doesn't solve the issue -- you'd have to be rid of (especially) Steven Miller, Vance and Russell Voight (sp), who stays under the radar but is bad goods, and others who have the influence. Our Congress is a mess, the courts seem to have folded (at least the Supremes) and when you look at ICE (Kent State recollection is spot on), it's a pretty scary place to be. Right now all we can do is protest, vote, write letters to our Congressman (who is pro-Trump, so a lot of good that does), contribute to candidates for the midterms. The Venezuela/Greenland etc. issues are disturbing in that it gives Russia and China "unstated permission" to take over Ukraine and Taiwan. Like you, I think this isn't forever; sooner or later the people will see, and more are, every day. But -- and it's a big but -- time takes a long while to pass and this doesn't bode well for many years with whatever aftermath comes. Personally, I'd like to see someone drop a bomb on wherever the next Cabinet meeting is and take them all out together. He's already ruined and demolished a historic building, it would be worth it to start over. (I am only somewhat joking -- I know that would throw the country into massive civil war and possibly belong as certainly there would be plenty of blame to throw around!) I just finished Louise Penny's "The Black Wolf" -- sequel to (wait for it) "The Gray Wolf." The final draft of "Black Wolf" went to the publishing company in September of 2024. But it is oddly, and frighteningly prophetic. (She said, tired from staying up till after 1 last night to finish!) Add it to your pile (You don't have to read "Gray Wolf" first, but it helps flesh out some of the characters and back story. They are fairly fast reads.)
ReplyDeleteICE, at least those marauding the streets of Democrat-run cities, are mostly uneducated, inept and untrained and given weapons and tasers and free rein.
ReplyDeleteAnd now a woman is dead.
To change a title from one of my blog posts, "That AIN'T America."
Trump is absolutely scary. You make a good point on why he has to take over a country. As a Canadian we have fears about what may happen.
ReplyDeleteYour avocado looks like you're keeping a very tall man prisoner in your back yard:)
ReplyDeleteAnd the US, trump and his fucking minions should all be ashamed of themselves and I hope they all end up in front of an international trial.
I admire your avocado dedication and I am sure there is an avocado goddess looking out for you.
ReplyDeleteApart from what goes on inside the US, which from what we see here, looks gruesome, the foreign policy stuff is nothing new, just now you have a president who says openly what the intentions are. Way back in 2003/2004, I remember being shouted at by a visitor from the US when I mentioned that Iraq was all about oil . . .
Have you ever watched"The Last Word" with Lawrence O'Donnell? Along with some other time-served observers, he claims that Trump and his gang are not really interested in taking over Greenland. All the noise around Greenland is a deliberate distraction as they plan to capture Cuba. Marco Rubio's parents were both born in Cuba and his first language was Spanish.
ReplyDeleteEpstien files take a back far back seat- also the plan!
DeleteI've been so frustrated this last week. It's like watching someone torch your house and there is nothing you can do to stop it. I've never been so embarrassed to be an American.
ReplyDeleteThe troops at Kent state were nervous and poorly trained. These ICE guys are psychopaths. They're functionally illiterate, have poor impulse control, and should not be armed. The shooter day before showed no remorse, was never in danger, and who DOES that?
ReplyDeleteActually it was Wednesday, the days are running together.
DeletePlus , as her car rolled away , she bleeding out, after getting murdered The "agent" shouted "Fucking Bitch!" - being a psychopath is a requisite for ICE - they have to be to do their job.
DeleteThere are so many changes that need to be made to protect our democracy in the future. How these crazy people have taken so much power has been such a shock to me.
ReplyDeleteThe less politics I see on blogs, the happier I am. I get enough of it in the real world. Blogging (like reading) is a chance to escape the insanity for a while.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I realized you were using duct tape to secure the avocado. That photo made me smile for some reason!
So Dig The Duck Tape - Well Done - As For The Useless Americans , Yup , They Happily Allow It To Happen Over And Over And Over Again - I Really Crossed My Paws And Believed That We Would Rise After The COVID Lockdown To Be The Better Humans , Lead With Wisdom , Project Sympathetic Values , And All While Restoring Humanity

Power and control. I believe those are two of the main factors in Trump wanting to take over these countries. He is desperate for people to think he is powerful and sees these military operations as a way to do that. And of course he wants to be the boss of everyone. The ruler of everyone. The dictator. The king of the world.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's what I think.
I don't worry as much about Trump as I do Miller. One of your previous commenters nailed it about Project 2025 and the powers behind the puppet president. I don't have much hope that things will change. The Fox News watchers are brainwashed and will never want to admit they're wrong. It's a depressing time.
ReplyDeleteWhat will the USA look like in 4 years?
ReplyDeleteWatching Project 2025 roll-out on the world stage is horrific.
Leadership approval ratings are in deep decline. Americans are taking notice.
The Internet and iPhone cameras are being used to record incidents (wrongs). Knowing about what is happening can only help keep us informed and consolidate the fight to retain Democracy.

ReplyDeleteA walk to work and a warming and welcoming hot chocolate sounds good.

The only covering of plants that is done here is if you want to protect from fruit fly or birds. That being said, the mantra that I use with gardening is "survive or compost"
