The Golden State

As I write, the dehumidifier has just beeped that it is once again full, which means it's time to dump another liter of water down the drain. I empty that thing twice a day. It's amazing how much humidity is in the air in autumn, even when we can air out the house on relatively warm days. And we're still trying to dry out that wall in the hallway so it can be painted. I feel like Sisyphus perpetually rolling his boulder uphill!

I usually station the dehumidifier right outside the bathroom, so that it can (hopefully) suck up the steam from our showers. Sometimes I move it to the bedroom, because on chilly mornings I wake to find the windows coated with droplets of moisture. I blame Olga's snoring.

Speaking of humidity, or lack thereof, Dave and I made a momentous decision a couple of days ago. We're going to Los Angeles for our vacation in February. We had credits to use on Delta that were about to expire, which meant we pretty much had to go to North America, and we decided we didn't want to go to Florida again. I've been back and forth from the Sunshine State so many times I've practically forgotten what the rest of the world is like. So, yeah, we're headed for someplace new!

We've talked about a California vacation for a while, but the state is so huge it seems to make sense to have one SoCal trip and another NoCal (do people say NoCal? Or maybe NorCal?) later on. So that's the plan! I'm thinking we'll work in a little jaunt to Palm Springs and maybe one to Big Sur, and Dave already has tickets to a performance of the LA Philharmonic.

LA is not entirely new to me -- I've been there several times. I think Dave has been there less. But I love Southern California so I'm always happy to go again. My dad grew up in Riverside and I used to have a lot of family in that region, but they've now entirely decamped to Idaho -- and I barely know them, anyway. They're all cousins I've met only once or twice, and possibly a very elderly aunt who would be in her 90s now, if she's still alive. So, anyway, no need to track down family. I wish Christopher was still alive but we can visit his husband Gerry and maybe we'll get to see blogger Elizabeth.

We plan on asking one of our co-workers to stay with Olga. If none are available we ought to be able to board her without too much trouble. It's not such a high-demand time of year that I should have to resort to a ridiculously expensive sitter like I did for our planned Florida trip last Christmas. (Which didn't happen anyway!)

California, here we come -- just like Lucy!

  3. Do you not have an exhaust fan in the bathroom to suck out the steam while you shower? We have them here in Aus and it seems a lot of people just don't use them because their bathrooms have black mould on the ceilings and sometimes the walls as well. I run my fan for every shower and then dry the shower walls and floor as well. I hope that wall gets dried before your winter sets in, it will take much longer if it doesn't.

  4. This is exciting. And the US is quite big, plenty of choices, though Chicago in February might not be one. Wave as you pass over my house. You're one of the few online friends who pretty much know where that is!

  7. What fun! Can't wait to hear all about it when you go (also that will mean the Christmas is over, for good or ill).

  8. SoCal should be wonderful in February! What a great change of pace.

Yes, I'm sure Olga's snoring is the cause of the window condensation!

  9. SoCal, at least that is what I say in the Midwest, doesn't excite me anymore after many visits. The traffic is just atrocious and for me, once you've seen the desert like surroundings, it is all the same. If I go back, it will be to NoCal where I would like to see more of the Sierras.

  13. Yeah, it's NorCal for areas North of Benicia ... I always said I was in MidCal when I was in Pittsburg and working in Oakland!
    SoCal ... Ugh!
All of California is ugh to me ... too expensive ... that's why I live in So. Colorado now!!

  15. That's exciting news! I love California. I've been to both LA and SFO. I liked them both in their own unique ways. I can't wait to see your photos!

  16. I've spent a lot of time in LA (actually mostly Santa Monica) because my older daughter lived there for 6 years while getting her PhD at UCLA. The food scene is incredible, and I love the beaches. Hope it's a great visit.

  19. That sounds like a great place to visit in February! I'll look forward to your posts from there.

Beautiful colors in your rhododendron. Things are just starting to look fall-ish around here.

  20. Being built in the 1700 S my cottage has poor ventilation and I use dehumidifiers in the bedroom

  21. As someone who lived in Northern California, I would NEVER say NoCal or NorCal.
LA is much nicer and easier to get around than in years past with their new subway systems. And Palm Springs in February should be fabulous.

  22. I've never understood the attraction of LA and I know little about it. I guess I learn more in February. I've always liked what I've heard about California as a whole.

The Lucy clip is good fun and I don't remember seeing it before. It is rather obvious that they are not driving over a bridge in a motor car.

  23. Is the Philharmonic playing in the Walt Disney Concert Hall by any chance? That's such a gorgeous place. Good choice for the vacation. There will be lots to see and do there.
