I walked past this corner after work one night last week and liked the shadows on that wall. I took some photos with my phone, but vowed to come back with my big camera to get some better ones. And then it rained, and it rained again, and the shadows don't look the same when there's glare from the wet wall. When I walked past last night, the sky had lightened and the scene wasn't the same.
So, on the plus side, it is getting lighter out there. There's now a smidgen of daylight when I'm walking home from work.
On the minus side, my plans for a better picture were stymied unless I make a special trip later in the evening.
Walking to work yesterday, I encountered this flock of circling pigeons, seemingly struggling to choose which photogenic rooftop to settle upon. They flew around and around, and then just as I got out my phone and started filming, they chose the roof of the Camden Arts Center.
Sometimes circumstances decide what kind of photo or video you get, and that's just the way it is!

ReplyDeletePhone photos are just as valid, especially with the improvement in the lenses that are used.
In The Guardian newspaper on Saturdays they have a series of photos taken on phones in the "Saturday" section, called Smart Shot.
The shadow photo is still great. I have a shadowed wall I always plan to capture ... and then it rains and changes everything. One of these nights.
ReplyDeleteI seem to recall one of my idols in the photograph world, Ansel Adams, mentions sometimes spending months at a location waiting on the perfect lighting. That is why his work can sell for hundreds if not thousands of dollars these days and mine zero.

ReplyDeleteMy photographer friend Wally, who specialized in European images, once said "I'd rather be lucky than good." He's right -- that's when you get the perfect photo -- when the light is right, the reflection on target, the traffic the way you need it, the conditions good.

ReplyDeleteI'm with Rosemarie! I don't have the eye to see a huge difference in iPhone shots and "real" camera shots.
ReplyDeleteThe pigeons may not have done exactly what you would have wanted but it's a lovely bit of video anyway.
Kind of like trying to get a picture of the dog or cat. By the time I get my phone/camera out they shift and it's not the picture I wanted.
ReplyDeleteI love watching the pigeons here do the same thing. They like the rooftop of the complex next door to me. The photo with the shadows is perfect and if you had gone back a second time, you probably would have missed those two sinister looking fellows walking on the street.
