Debate

It sounds like Kamala emerged victorious from last night's presidential debate. I didn't watch but I've just been reading about it and I'm pretty happy with that consensus. It sounds like she ably stood up to Trump's baloney. Meanwhile, commenters in the right-wing media are resorting to fantasies and the usual misogynistic tropes. One reader of a conservative fake-news website wrote: "She was FULL of adrenacrome, folks. Obvious." Another said: "She acted like a married woman arguing with her husband bringing up irrelevant things from the past to piss him off."

And have you seen the memes of Trump cradling kittens and ducks, supposedly protecting them from scary immigrants who want to eat them? (Despite the fact that authorities in the town where the immigrants live say there's no evidence for those falsehoods.) To be honest, the memes are hilarious, and I would post one here except that I can't bring myself to put that man's face on my blog, even in a humorous or mocking way.

This is what Republicans bring to the table -- conspiratorial gobbledygook and misogyny. This is the best they can do.

Well, I know who I'm voting for. And she doesn't live at Mar-a-Lago.

  1. Thanks to insomnia I heard about half on the radio, plus news reports later.
    She's a good 'un

    1. I think she hasn't really been able to show her talents as VP, but she seems very capable.

  2. She is young and switched on compared to other top politicians, which must be a great change for you

    1. At the risk of sounding ageist, it's like a breath of fresh air to have a younger candidate.

  3. There has been plenty of film footage of Trump's supporters leaving his rallies early as he rambles on in a weird, unfocused manner - saying whatever comes into his head. And yet in spite of the evidence, Trump denies that his rallies tend to thin out after an hour - it's like sports fans who are sicking of seeing their team lose.

    1. There's only so much of listening to him that people can take! An hour of talking is a LOT of talking.

  4. She looked like a leader. She was thoughtful, full of facts, and made him look like what he is: a racist, misogynist fool. How this race is even close is beyond me. I am hoping the so-called polls are wrong and that Kamala will win in a landslide. I'm 61 and have always voted; I've never been asked to take a poll, so perhaps there is hope.

    1. I agree -- it's astonishing that the race is as close as it is.

  5. I was nervous to watch because I wanted so badly for her to do well, and for tRump to show his true colors. Thankfully, she did do well, and the felon looked like the fool that he is. What I just will never understand, is why so many people support him. I just simply do not get it.

  6. People are paid to attend his rallies and required to stay an hour yo get paid. That's why they start leaving about then. Smoke and mirrors.

  7. I hope people in general paid attention to the debate, I'm sure it did sway steadfast folks on either side, however if a person was on the fence, it gave them something to think about his rudeness and her quiet demeanor

    His buffoonery was epic.

  10. Mike used to drive through Springfield Ohio on his way to the university where he taught. I mean, it was a depressed area, but not THAT depressed! What in the world. It's not that far from where JD Vance was raised - I wonder if he had beef with their high school or something?

    1. All this focus on Springfield (and the pets of Springfield) is truly bewildering. Apparently these rumors began with Facebook posts, and who knows who was behind those and what their agenda may have been.

  11. The debate was hard to watch, mostly because Trump was spouting such crazy lies. At a certain point I just had to laugh at how ridiculous he was. Kamala Harris was outstanding.

  12. I watched the first hour and was glad to see Kamala standing strong while he just did his usual crazy ranting. From what I have read, she won that debate. Also, Taylor Swift declared that she will vote for Harris/Walz. I read that his campaign's use of an AI of Taylor making it look like she supported Trump convinced her to make sure everyone knew she was NOT for him.

    1. Yeah, I read about Taylor Swift and I hope that makes a big difference with younger voters. I love how Trump said she's damaged her marketability by endorsing Harris. I'm suspect few Taylor Swift fans are Trumpers.

  13. Kamala owned that stage from the get-go! He went off the rails immediately!
She nailed his lies and so did David Muir and the lady occasionally!
It was a quick 90 minutes!!

  14. We watched the whole thing. And within the first few minutes he was going on about post-birth abortion and the millions, MILLIONS of criminals flooding our borders. I think that this pair of moderators did a very good job of keeping Trump on point, or at least as much as anyone could. And Kamala never lost it. She simply made it clear that she's not buying his bullshit.

    1. The right-wing media is calling it a "three-against-one debate," as if the moderators were part of the Trump opposition. No, they were just doing their jobs and keeping him on track!

  15. KH did wonderfully well in the debate. She immediately took the upper hand by walking to DT's podium and graciously shaking his hand. She is a class act. He was surprised to have her enter his space and was immediately off kilter. Great move KH!
DT continues to spew his BS and nobody is buying it.

  16. I could only get through about ten minutes of it and then had to shut it off. Trump of course lied in every breath and Kamala promised things if elected that she has no power or authority to do. Not sure if that is considered a lie or just a intentional bogus promises. Both repeatedly promised how much money they were going to give back to people and other specified groups and I expect there was not one mention of how we are all going to pay for all this later in the debate. Maybe it got better after the first ten minutes but I'll probably not watch the rest and find out.

I guess I've been off the political news cycle for too long as last night was the first I had heard of this whole eating pets thing. I'm sure my Trumper acquaintances will be telling me it's the gospel truth later and those sorts of things are impossible to disprove since you can't prove a negative, i.e. missing pet was eaten by illegal aliens and not other non-bipedal animals. I saw several Facebook posts this morning of people marking their pets safe from aliens. I thought those were pretty funny.

    1. Well, politicians always make campaign promises, and most voters know to take them as a general statement of perspective or intent, and not a script for how things will definitively be. I don't mind campaign promises as much as I mind outright lies about the state of things.

  17. I'm with you! I did watch the debate and thought she handled herself extremely well. The lies he threw out were unbelievable. I had just heard about the dog/cat thing yesterday morning when I read that billboards were going up about it. I was actually shocked that he brought it up. I did like the fact that the moderators corrected him a couple of times after some far-fetched lie came out of his mouth.

  19. I wish I knew who I was voting for, because I can't see myself voting for either of them. One would be bad for my life in general, the other would be bad for my pocketbook. I can't remember when I've been as despondent going into an election.

    1. Of course I don't know your particular financial situation, but I'm not sure Harris would be much worse for your pocketbook at the end of the day. Republicans talk about lowering taxes but they mostly only do it for very rich people and corporations.

  20. After watching the DNC (much to our surprise) we watched all of the debate. It was exhausting. That man is a wall of sound, signifying nothing. It really was jangling, seeing him glaring into the camera and lying. We were both stunned when he actually said the lie about Haitians taking ducks out of public ponds and eating them, as well as the local cats.

  21. I didn't watch it either but I did monitor social media. she was in complete control pushing all his buttons and HRC's newsletter from yesterday gave a lot of background on the trolling of Trump through their campaign ads in the city the day of the debate including a drone display that turned 'vice president Harris' into 'president Harris'.

    1. I don't know how you can stand to monitor social media. I think that would give me more angst than just watching the debate!

  22. The whole Trump[ed] up thing I just don't get. The guy has a illusions of grandeur so unwarranted I am amazed that none of those close to him (say, his kids) take him aside and say: "Come on, Dad. Just stop it. Reality check." If he were my father (who is only nine years older than Trump and not exactly a shrinking violet himself but, largely, still with it) I'd curl up with the embarrassment of it all. Disown him if necessary. And anyway, and no one has yet been able to explain to me, why is a convicted felon allowed to run for office?

On good news, just read, it appears that a sizeable contingent of Republicans too are dismayed at his performance yesterday evening. Though what's new? I am a great one for damage limitation. But there are, well, limitations before a dike breaks and doesn't hold water any longer.

I'm glad Republicans are unhappy with Trump's performance. They should never have permitted him to be a candidate in the first place and I hope he gives them all intense heartburn. He is a pathological narcissist.

  26. Watched the whole thing, KH did an excellent job, baited him and he took it, laughed at him and pissed him off. And I almost spit out my wine when he started in on that garbage about Haitians eating ducks and cats. In all seriousness, his dementia was on full display, incoherent, could not hold a train of thought, kept going back to the crap about "millions of illegals" when asked a question about something entirely different. The man is a real piece of work.
