Ho Ho Ho
This was one of my little projects yesterday -- to get some holiday cheer going. I know, it might seem a little early, but we don't have the barrier of Thanksgiving here in the UK, so psychologically I'm already gearing up for Christmas. Keeping in mind, of course, that putting up one strand of lights is about as geared up as I get.
You might remember that our previous lights died at the end of last year's holiday season, so I had to wander down to the DIY store on the high street and pick up a new set. They had them in 8- and 16-meter sizes, which both seemed gigantic. I certainly do not need 16 meters of Christmas lights. Finally I found a 6-meter strand and bought that, and it was more than enough for our fiddle-leaf fig, which in the absence of the avocado is now our stand-in Christmas tree.
These LED lights cost £15, which seemed a bit expensive, but hey, I'm supporting a local business.
Here's what they look like at night. I'm digging the mirror effect in the multiple windows.
When first plugged in, they strobed and pulsed like the dance floor at Studio 54. (Or what I imagine it to have looked like, anyway.) We tried to live with it at first but all the flashing was just too distracting, so I read the box and learned the lights have multiple settings. Indeed, there is a tiny button on the plug that, when pushed seven times, sets the lights to "static" mode. (The intermediate settings are various speeds and styles of strobing -- fast, slow, green/yellow followed by red/blue, etc.)
Anyway it's taken me almost as long to write about these lights as it did to acquire and install them.
Otherwise, we hunkered down. It was very windy all day, particularly in the morning, as a result of Storm Bert. The worst of the storm struck far to the north and west of us, but we got some strong gusts. The Russians have some large plants on their terrace and every once in a while one of them would blow over, sending a reverberating THUD through the house, despite Mrs. Russia tying them to the railings.
I did get out and do some gardening, cutting back the persicaria and the old blackberry canes, and some other miscellaneous stuff. I filled three yard waste bags. Olga, who normally likes to join me when I'm gardening, stayed on the couch (as did Dave).
Last night, Dave made stuffed shells -- which were delicious, but my God, when he was done the kitchen was a disaster. I ran a load of dishes last night and had to do a second one this morning. I think he used every pot. Still, I cannot complain, since if it weren't for Dave I'd be eating tuna fish from a can.

My kitchen life is like yours. If I want to eat, and eat well, I have to regularly clean up after the hurricane. I’ve never seen a fiddle-leaf fig Christmas tree! I love those lights. I was shocked by the price but, once I read about all the settings, I understood.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how long that little button is going to work, though. Having to press it so often will wear it out, I'm sure!
DeleteThe annoying thing about those lights with all the settings - and they all seem to have them now - is that you have to do the pressing 7 times to get to the continuous light setting every time you put the darn things on!
ReplyDeleteYES! Why doesn't it remember the setting?!
DeleteThe Russian thuds from above must have made you nervously conjecture that World War III had started. Seeing the state of the kitchen - it must have appeared that one of their missiles had got through. However, you fought back with some fairy lights.
ReplyDeleteI use whatever weapons are at hand!
DeletePricey string of seizure inducing lights, glad you found the button to calm them sown. I understand about the kitchen- I was taught to clean as I go , making cooking take all day, discouraging me from cooking anything very complicated. - tuna from a tin sounds perfect . Tidy.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm all for tidiness! I often think if Dave had to clean his own kitchen he'd curtail the use of all those pots and pans.
DeleteCarlos is known to use skillets and pans and pots and past pots and cookie sheets, blenders, food processors, ovens, stoves, microwaves, to cook dinner for two!
ReplyDeleteI like your spot of Christmas [light] cheer!
Right?! How much equipment does one person need for a single meal?!
DeleteI used to decorate my ficus as a Christmas tree, with a string of lights. I remember that minute set of controls to just get them to stay still. I don't know why that's not the default.
ReplyDeleteWhen a cook knows someone else is doing cleanup, they tend to run mad! I do both, but one sinkful of dishes is usually it. Anything that won't fit gets cleaned right away. Otherwise I'd be too depressed!
I didn't even realize these lights blinked until l got home and put them on. Like you, I expected static to be the default setting. But I guess in the world of Christmas decorations, people think the flashier the better!
DeleteThe tree looks great. I couldn't handle the flashing either! But seems like that should be the first option, not the seventh! Rick and Dave sound cut from the same cloth when it comes to pans and the kitchen! I try to clean up as I work so it's not terrible, even if things DO stack in the sink at times. Ah well, the meal sounds fabulous so I'd happily do an extra load for that one!
ReplyDeleteWell, that's how I feel -- even though I am grumbling about the cleaning, I get a good meal out of it so I can't really complain too much.
DeleteIf I lived by myself, a six meter strand would be the limit of my decorating too!
ReplyDeleteStuffed shells? Is that like manicotti? I make that now and again here. My wife cooks much like Dave. I feel like as if I wash every pot, bowl and gadget multiple times for something served in a single dish. But I bite my tongue since she does like to cook and although I like to eat, I prefer not to cook.
Very similar to manicotti, except manicotti is a tube and the shells are sort of bowl-shaped.
DeleteYour lights look very pretty, Steve. I will start the Christmas decorating after Thanksgiving as I host our group in my home. I woke up thinking about all of the pots I will need for this feast. I've done it for several years now so I shouldn't worry about it but I will anyway... I don't mind doing it but I am always glad when it is over. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving always demands a lot of mental preparation from the host! Bravo to your courage for taking on that task. :)
DeleteSo Dave is not a clean-as-you-go sort of guy? Like Linda Sue, that's how I was taught and I like doing it. Otherwise, the kitchen gets way too cluttered and I hate cooking in a cluttered kitchen. However, it does always seem as if I never cleaned a thing while cooking as there is always still a mess.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to get out a string of lights too. Maybe.
If "clean as you go" means stacking the dirty stuff in the sink, then yeah, he's a clean-as-you-go sort of guy. :)
DeleteJack keeps asking when the Christmas tree is going up, I just don't have the energy right now. Lights on a ficus sounds like my speed.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't do much this weekend, snowed all weeked and the cat is pissed. She keeps complaining.
I can't imagine putting up a whole tree. With kids there's a certain degree of appreciation for all that work, but when it's just us it seems silly!
DeleteI like your festive fig tree. No wonder those lights were so expensive, all those settings must take a lot of programing.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea when I bought them that they had so many settings!
DeleteI have a string of little white lights that I picked up for cheap at an estate sale. I strung them around the cereus that winter thinking they would provide some heat but, no. I have no idea where they are now. doesn't matter, I don't do christmas and I'm already sick of christmas music in the stores. but I like your colored lights.
ReplyDeleteYeah, LEDs in particular don't provide any warmth at all. Remember those Christmas lights from the '70s, with the big bulbs? THOSE things got warm!
DeleteI guess we have to be careful what we buy. Thangs can get complicated very quickly.
ReplyDeleteHa! They really can.
DeleteI especially like the reflection of the lights in your windows! Looks quite festive!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me feel like I've done far more decorating than I actually have!
DeleteI love the lights! We didn't put our tree up last year but I think I'm going to do it this year. Maybe. I was telling someone that now that Mike is obsessed with cast iron pans my after dinner cleaning has gotten a lot easier - I'm not allowed to touch them so he cleans them up himself.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's a plus, as long as he DOES clean them and they don't sit around for days.
DeleteThe lights on the fig tree look festive and perfect for the holidays.
ReplyDeleteThe shops have increased prices on all the holiday decorations. Everything seems high.
We need as much holiday cheer as we can get!
I guess I can't blame them for wanting to make a profit! Maybe I'll go back after Christmas and try to pick up a few more strands at a discount.
DeleteImpressive decorations! As usual, we'll probably do absolutely nothing like that.

DeleteFor some reason I can't reply to this comment. Let me try again:
DeleteHa! As I said, this is as good as it gets around here.
How clever! Use one string of lights but position the tree so that it reflects from multiple directions, making it look as if you've used many strings of lights! When my son was on his own, he didn't 'get' decorating for Christmas. I bought him a small artificial tree about 6 inches tall to slap on his coffee table. And...that was the extent of his decorating for a couple years.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to say that I planned those reflections but it really was completely accidental. :)
DeleteA string of lights sounds about right to me. We have a fake two foot tall flocked tree that spends most of the year in a closet. He'll come out for the event, and then go back New Year's day. Poor thing, doesn't see much daylight. The fig is an impressive house plant.
ReplyDeleteAnd is your tree already pre-decorated, or do you have to do the whole ornaments thing? We have some ornaments in a box but they're staying there this year.
DeletePerhaps I am alone in this, but it seems to me that the default setting to Xmas lights would be steady burn, flashing is seizure-inducing for me. That said I like the lights, festive.
ReplyDeleteI agree! The default setting is a rotating sampler of all the different types of flashing, which is especially seizure-inducing.
DeleteI keep thinking I should get a couple of colored light bulbs and put them in the garage lights for the holidays but so far I've dithered about it.
ReplyDeleteJust keep thinking and soon it will be New Year's! LOL!
DeleteThose are very festive and pretty. We used to have a strand of lights that had numerous options, one of which was strobe. Yuck. I preferred them on all the time or fade. (a slow peaceful transition from color to color)
ReplyDeleteYeah, fade isn't bad. Ours has that setting too.
DeleteI like your festive look! I keep a strand up in my kitchen (around my pantry doors) year round. It makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteWhen I put the colored lights on the avocado last year, I came to appreciate them so much that I decided to leave them up all winter. But then the whole strand died!
DeleteThat light scheme is really lovely. Glad you are safe and that you had something delicious for dinner. Aloha friends
ReplyDeleteThank you, and Aloha to you too! (Or maybe I should say, "Cheers, mate!")
DeleteThe lights look nice! Next you can head to Florida and decorate my house. I would also like to stay on the couch while you work in my yard.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Ha! I don't really want to make a career of it. :)
DeleteWhere ARE my comments going? Anyways, it is very clever that you thought to use one string of lights, but triple the effect by putting the fig tree by the window where the light is reflected multiple times.
ReplyDeleteWhile the poor avocado tree shivers outside remembering last Christmas when he was decorated and warm inside the house....
For some reason you and Boud often go to spam, but don't worry, I will find you!
DeleteI like to think the avocado is happier out there, despite the cold weather.
Your lights look lovely and I agree with several others here that static should be the default setting. The proce seems a bit high, but how many years will they last? They could well be worth the cost if you are still using them five Christmases from now.
ReplyDeleteWell, that remains to be seen. Our last strand lasted about ten years, so yeah, if we get that long out of this one I'll feel like I got my money's worth!
