I Can See Clearly Now
As I sat on the back garden bench yesterday morning, this was my view. The sun was so bright, backlighting the green alkanet (on the right) and the teasels in the parts of our garden that I leave purposely weedy, and Olga was soaking up every ray.
I stayed home all day, doing work around the house.
Allow me to explain this photo. See that opened box of suet balls for the bird feeder? Well, it wasn't open -- at least not that much -- before Olga wandered past unsupervised. And see the crumbs of suet on the floor on the beige rug and the purple rug by the table?
Yes. Someone had a bird-food snack. And she isn't a bird.
This was my major project for the day. I hadn't cleaned the front windows of the house in a long time. They're hard to do because they're quite high off the ground, especially those top ones, and until recently we had some very large and overgrown shrubs beneath the window. But after the Russians insisted on having everything pruned within an inch of its life, I could finally get in there to clean. (I hate giving the Russians credit for anything, but this was a plus, I admit.)
I tried using a ladder, but the ground is too uneven and there was no place to safely brace it against the wall. So I switched to a chair, which worked fine. I still couldn't reach the top ones, though, so I had to do those from the inside, leaning out the side windows and sticking my arm out the top.
If I'm making this sound like a major project, IT WAS! Indoors, the window area is normally crowded with plants and the sill is full of orchids and tchotchkes. So I had to move all that stuff out of the way and do a thorough wipe-down not only of the glass but the window frames and the sill. I ran the tchotchkes -- vases and whatnot -- through the dishwasher, and then put everything back.
The windows look so good now! I keep wandering into the dining room just to admire them.
I also did the little alcove next to our front door, where I keep a collection of vases and my Rhipsalis cactus. Can you believe how big that thing has grown, from a tiny cutting?!
This all took me a couple of hours, believe it or not.
Afterwards I read blogs and finished a book and watered plants. The jury is still out on the survival of our tree fern. I still can't believe how quickly it gave up the ghost -- it went from looking fine to entirely crinkly and dry in a matter of days, but it was probably suffering from a deficit of water for a long time and we just never realized. I feel so guilty.
Today is my last full day of alone time. Dave returns tomorrow morning, and while I'll be glad to see him, I must say I have really enjoyed being able to listen to my own music, and keep the end table next to his chair clear of detritus, and access the bathrooms anytime I want.

It seems Olga still retains a youthful spirit if she had enough motivation to open cans of bird food.
ReplyDeleteNot a can, a box! And she only moved the flap aside and knocked it over -- I'd already opened it. She hasn't developed thumbs or anything. :)
DeleteMy windows are badly in need of cleaning, too, but although they are very easy to do (for one thing, there is nothing on my windowsills on the inside, and only a potted plant or two outside), it is the least favourite household job I can think of. That's probably because I am never entirely happy with the result, and because I find it frustrating that nearly every time I have cleaned them, a day or two later it rains heavily and the windows look as if they have not been cleaned in ages.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised you do not have someone coming to clean them. One of the difference I noticed very early on between daily life in England and Germany was that as good as everyone I know in Yorkshire (and these are not posh or rich people, just regular working class folk) has professional window cleaners coming a few times a year, while here in Germany, only companies (and probably rich people with big houses) order such services.
Last but not least, I perfectly understand what you say about your alone time. I have been living on my own since Steve died in November 2009, and being alone has never been a problem. Of course, I don't feel lonely, because I have family and friends nearby, and found love again; we spend nearly every weekend and most of our holidays together.
Wherever I've stayed in Germany the windows have been inward dual style opening, tip from the top of wide from the side...I 'm glad I have them here..no need for ladders, clean from the inside
DeleteI thought about hiring someone to do my windows but it seemed so lazy! I'd have had to do that if we weren't only on the ground floor, I suppose -- upper floor windows definitely need professional attention.
DeleteThat time alone has really flown by. You packed a lot into it.
ReplyDeleteI decided to clean all our windows inside and out during last week's sunny spell. Such a fiddly job with all the small leaded panes it is something I tend to put off until we can't see outside!
Ugh -- leaded windows are the worst. We have leaded windows in our front door and I dread cleaning them.
DeleteI love your returning just to admire your work! That's a proper pride. A big job, too
ReplyDeleteMuch bigger than I thought it would be! (I've done it before but it was years ago.)
DeleteI hope that Olga hasn't had any repercussions after eating the bird balls ! How many did she scoff? Your windows look very shiny......hard work with all those little panes!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing she ate two, based on two spots of crumbs, but who knows?!
DeleteI wish they had fatballs for humans - containing bacon bits, crushed peanuts, fried onions and diced carrots. I bet they've got them in Russia! Good job on the window cleaning Steve! Let there be light!
ReplyDeleteI think those are called hors d'oeuvres.
DeleteNaughty Olga, but I bet she couldn't believe her luck. Your windows are sparkling - no wonder you keep returning to admire them. Enjoy your last day of alone time.
ReplyDeleteShe obviously wasn't too carried away with them because she hasn't been fixated on eating more!
DeleteIt looks so good. I’d be constantly returning to admire the work and the view. I hope Olga didn’t eat too many (or much) of the suet balls. She didn’t leave much of a mess on the floor so clearly licked it up. What a stinker!
ReplyDeleteShe knew she was being a bad dog. Look at her on the couch, pretending nothing is amiss!
DeleteMy balcony windows and glass are easier, but too much for me. Your bay window is lovely.
ReplyDeleteSo do you get pros in to clean them? Or do Phyllis and Kosov do it?
DeleteI have a "thing" for cleaning windows. It is an extendable pole that comes with two attachments, a mop for scrubbing and wetting the windows and a squeegee for getting the water off. I clean our living room windows with it safely from the ground some 15 feet below.
ReplyDeleteI hope you pick up after Olga. Fertilized bird seeds will probably grow fairly quickly where ever she um... relieves herself.
I have a squeegee but no pole. I could easily buy a pole for it, I suppose.
DeleteYou never know how dirty the windows are until you clean them. I would be really happy with my work ... so now I have to go clean windows.
ReplyDeleteIt really does make a huge difference!
DeleteLeaning out with arm through little window to clean is above and beyond! Getting things done while no one is there but you and your bird dog - relaxing and productive. Seedy lard cakes , loud music and sunshine- sounds ideal!
ReplyDeleteIt felt good to get all that stuff out of the way!
DeleteTruly, clean windows can change your literal outlook on life. You did a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteThank you! They really do make a huge difference.
DeleteI Do Believe That You Wore Out Queen Olga Girl For Sure - Soaking Up The Sun And Holding Down The Couch , What A Wonderful Life - Excellent Work On Those Windows For A Fitting Title Brother Man
ReplyDeleteWell Done ,
Cheers
Ha! It doesn't take much to wear her out these days. Digesting a couple of suet balls does the trick!
DeleteIt is really nice to have the house to yourself, to be able to just do whatever without having to be considerate of someone else or work around them. In my case it's the dining room table. Marc uses it as a desk even though he has his own office room and desk in there. The table is piled high with his newspapers, mail and bills, whatever book he's reading. Granted he spends most of the day there at the table but it drives me crazy.
ReplyDeleteThe windows in this house are awful and yeah cleaning windows is a chore.
I hate stacks of paper. They are a pet peeve of mine.
DeleteI was going to mention the tool that Ed mentioned. Seems like you should have one of those.
ReplyDeleteGlad the suet balls did not bother Olga's stomach. Your break went by quickly but you did get a lot done and had some nice adventures. The end of school will be coming soon.
Yeah, I feel good about all I was able to cram into this week!
DeleteI like having the house to myself too, but it rarely happens around here, so we've both adapted to having each other around. I HATE to clean windows. I'm not very good at it, and I can't really use my frozen shoulder. I especially struggle with the inside windshield of my car. I keep buying gadgets to see if they help, but sadly they do not. Grump grump grump.
ReplyDeleteKeep that frozen shoulder moving, start with mini shrugs several times a day and progress from there. When you can comfortably do mini shrugs try small back and forth movements, then just keep trying different movements a bit larger, a bit wider. Takes time but works.
DeleteRiver, I have some exercises my PT gave me, but I had other health issues (low iron) that for some reason made me think I couldn't continue the exercises. Which is ridiculous. I shall do as you say & then start on the exercises again!
DeleteMy mom had a frozen shoulder and her PT gave her these stretchy bands she was supposed to exercise with. She eventually got her range of motion back. If I still had the bands I'd mail them to you!
DeleteThe windows look great. You did a good job. I can't believe that Olga helped herself to some bird food. What a nice sunny day you had.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe it either! As Mitchell said, she's a stinker.
DeleteI was just thinking that Olga seems to sleep her life away now until I got to the part about the suet balls. 😂 I'd be quick to let her out today should she ask...
ReplyDeleteAll my pictures show her collapsed on the lawn but she is quite active for short periods of time, in between long naps.
DeleteOlga ate suet balls. Were there any bad repercussions from her doing that? The windows do look really good, you do nice work.
ReplyDeleteYou mean from me or from her digestive system? I guess it doesn't matter because the answer is "no" in both cases. :)
DeleteYour windows are sparkling. That's a big job, well done.
ReplyDeleteNaughty girl Olga! Bird seed? What was she thinking. Hopefully her tummy does not react to poorly.
There's no sign of any discomfort at all!
DeleteI hope Dave notices the expertly cleaned windows.
ReplyDeleteOh, don't worry, I'll point them out to him. :)
DeleteWindows were clearly a lot of work, but worth it. They look really good. Suet balls? Dogs will eat just about anything!
ReplyDeleteAnything with fat in it! I'm surprised she doesn't eat soap.
DeleteSparkling clean windows are a lovely gift to oneself. I like the way that room is laid out - much more interesting a look than four square walls like I have.
ReplyDeleteSometimes a girl just has to get her own snack, right, Olga? Hopefully it was processed without any drama :)
The alcove is a weird little space, which happened only because the formerly single-family house was divided into two flats. It's not very useful but my cactus apparently likes it!
DeleteYou have so much light, I understand the collection of plants now
ReplyDeleteWe are very happy with all the light we get. My New York apartment had one window -- north facing! This is a big change!
DeleteI love that glassed in alcove with the windows that open to warm breezes. But do insects come in? Or don't you have insects in England?
ReplyDeleteWe have barely any insects. Flies and occasionally bees come inside and then I have to shepherd them outside again, which can be challenging. :/
DeleteIs Olga okay after eating bird food?
ReplyDeleteShe's fine. Didn't hurt her at all.
DeleteThe windows look lovely. Keep watering the tree fern, it might surprise you a few months from now.
ReplyDeleteActually, it has already surprised us! Watch for Monday's post!
DeleteYou're blog has sunk so that it is unreadable. Is that something on this end or your end?. I can't see to edit this comment.
ReplyDeleteDo you mean my writing has sunk so low in quality? LOL!
DeleteSeriously, I assume it's something about your screen settings. Not sure what might be causing that. Perhaps it will correct itself by tomorrow!
Dave will think he returned to a new place with that clean view! That's a huge job. I need to do mine and they're so out of control. Well done. That Olga! Glad it's just crumbs on the rug.
ReplyDeleteThe windows! I'm lost in admiration. Whenever I try, I end up smearing them rather than cleaning them. Plus, I don't like standing on ladders or chairs with my vertigo. The last time I had my windows cleaned though, it cost a lot of $$.
