Frost and Circling Pigeons

We are in the deep freeze here, at least as deep as our freezes usually get. It's 31º F this morning, so just barely freezing, but it's enough to put a coating of heavy frost on the garden.

I checked on the avocado yesterday afternoon, just peeking beneath its coverings, and it looked OK.

This was sunrise yesterday morning. You can see the frost on the cars. Not a cloud in the sky!

I took a long walk yesterday afternoon to try to soak up some of this rare sunshine. Of course I was mostly covered, but it still does a body good to get outside and just get sun even on the face and hands. I walked up to Childs Hill Park and over to the Clitterhouse Playing Fields, where I used to walk with Olga back when she was more adventurous.

This area near Brent Cross has undergone quite a transformation. There's a ton of new construction, and remember how ratty that little shop used to look? The colorful mural is a huge improvement. The buildings behind it are all new, having gone up in the area that Olga and I found fenced off several years ago.

This flock of pigeons circled above me while I walked on Cheviot Gardens near the playing fields. Watching the birds was really an excuse to look at that glorious sky! I always wonder why pigeons fly like this, but in this particular case I think they were just like me -- out for some exercise, exulting in the sunshine.

I came back via Fortune Green and had a coffee at Sweet Corner before coming home. And then I had a Thai massage at 4 p.m. The masseuse was quite talkative at the beginning but I didn't respond much -- I like a quiet massage -- and she ultimately settled into the work and did a great job. My lower back has been giving me fits lately and she helped knead it into submission.

We're watching "No Good Deed" on Netflix, with Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano. It's very good! Kudrow, who we all know as kooky Phoebe from "Friends,"  is a good actress when she has a role with a dramatic edge. I remember seeing her years ago in a movie called "Kabluey" and although I had mixed feelings about the movie, she was good in it. Anyway, we're enjoying the show.

  1. I love your Pigeons on Piano! I was just wondering about No Good Deed. I’ll add it to our list. The mural on the building completely transforms it. Wow!

  2. I am surprised that Percy the lead pigeon didn't say to his squadron, "Prepare to drop bombs!" when he spotted you walking below. By "bombs" I really mean pigeon poop.

  3. I am waiting for the local pigeon flocks to join forces with the gangs of green parakeets, currently in competition but once they consolidate their powers, we will need new feeding strategies.
I tried a walk yesterday but even interesting murals - if we had any - would have sent me back soon enough, much too cold.

  5. Thanks for the review on "No Good Deed". I have been meaning to check that show out. That mural is beautiful!

  6. Lisa kudrow was the only reason I occasionally watched Friends. Her intelligence left the other cast members in the dust.
Your observation of changes in your walks is interesting to follow. You remember so much to compare with today's views.

  7. Again- about the same temperature here this morning. It will warm up although not too much.
We've been watching "No Good Deed" too. It's got a good cast for sure.

  9. Nice video, Steve! I loved how you were able to keep filming them as they swirled around and the music was a great addition! Thanks for mentioning "No Good Deed" - I will check it out. Have you watched the movie "Six Triple Eight"? I thought it was well done and a great film.

  10. Today the big heavy stuff comes in because starting tomorrow night 6 nights with lows between 29 and 34 and 5 days with highs in the 40s. Overcast today and rain tomorrow. Another reason to get it all done today. And yes, that mural is a big improvement.

  12. We are in a deeper freeze here right now with 9F our high for the day. I don't plan on going outside at all.

  13. There is a group of pigeons that do exactly the same thing around the roof top of the condos next door. It's interesting to watch. I love that frosty street scene. I haven't started "No Good Deed" yet but the preview with Linda Lavin caught my eye immediately. Good to hear that it's a good one. I've been watching "Dalgliesh" on Acorn recently. It's your typical British detective series with a very moody but brilliant detective in charge. Are there any of those around in real life?

  14. Thanks for the tip. I love Ray Romano but am torn on Lisa Kudrow since I only know her from "Friends." It's not very cold here and I'm fine with that! Our skiers and snowboarders probably aren't though.

  15. No Good Deed is definitely on my list. I started the Harlan Corben series Missing You last night, watched the first episode and wasn’t quite “caught.” Maybe I’ll switch. And it’s freezing cold here in NYC too right now.

  16. Love your sky photos! It was in the 20s when I woke up this morning but now we're a balmy 41 degrees. The cold never bothered me anyway - NOT A TRUE STATEMENT ELSA!

  17. I think those pigeons were fascinated by the jets making contrails in their sky! Our high temps dropped from about 70 yesterday to the mid-50's today but still sunny.

  18. A clear blue sky with sunshine is uplifting. The frigid cold, not so much. It's in the 20'sF in Massachusetts. No snow, just very cold with light wind.
Love the mural. Is the expansive new construction housing?

  19. I like all your photos today AND the video! There's something about frost on plants which I love (though I'm not sure the plants love it).

  20. The frost is pretty but I don't like the cold that's necessary for it to happen. Lovely mural. I could look up No Good Deed, but my hard drive is already full of stuff I need to catch up on. I'm not one of those people who runs the TV all day, I only watch from 6pm news until I go to bed around 11pm.

  21. The frost photos are so beautiful. Almost like a painting. And sunrise on your street is indeed lovely!
