Buddha, Frida and Some Mermaids

This is a view of the side yard at the house where we're staying. The camper belongs to the neighbors, but we also have a camper, a trendy little teardrop-shaped thing sitting by the front gate. We have been informed that it is not part of the lease, so sadly, I can't look inside it. (Except through the windows.)

The big turquoise Buddha head, believe it or not, is only one of several big Buddha heads we have lying around. Whoever decorated this place has a definite affinity for Buddhist imagery, as well as tropical prints and...

...Frida Kahlo.

Here's our groovy little kitchen, which believe it or not has both a washing machine and a miniature dishwasher despite its small size. The fridge is one of those little college dorm models, but it's enough for us under these circumstances.

As the day dawned yesterday morning -- the shortest of the year -- I looked out that window over the kitchen sink and saw some trash blowing around in the front yard. Sure enough some animals had pulled bags of rubbish out of our bin and strewn it around. The bin is so full of trash from previous renters that the lid won't close, which is a problem. I collected and re-bagged all the rubbish (ugh), put it back in the bin and wired the lid closed, as best I could, with an old coat hanger. Now I just have to remember to take the wire off in time for collection tomorrow morning. It seems to be my lot in life to manage the world's refuse.

We ordered groceries yesterday morning, and then promptly realized we'd forgotten paper towels and wine, which are pretty much essentials as far as I'm concerned. So I walked to the nearest convenience store before lunch and bought a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a kitchen roll.

Otherwise, we barely left the house. Well, Dave didn't leave it at all, and Olga only ventured as far as the yard.

I tried to get her to walk on the beach with me in the afternoon, but she was having none of it. I don't blame her, really. It rained all morning and ever since it's been blowing a gale out there.

Which is good for the offshore wind farm that we can see from the back deck. All the turbines are topped with flashing red lights that pulse on the horizon at night. It's kind of a cool effect. (This was taken at low tide, hence all the exposed sand. I'm not sure what that green buoy is for, but there are oyster-farming frames nearby so maybe it has something to do with those.)

Also enjoying the wind was an incredibly cold-hardy windsurfer. And see those weird things on the horizon? Those are Maunsell Forts, which were erected at the mouth of the Thames during wartime to guard the estuary. They're abandoned now, and apparently it's possible to take a boat tour out there, but Dave vetoed that idea. I guess being bounced around in an Uber was enough for him, in his post-surgical state. He doesn't need bouncing in a boat, too.

It's supposed to be windy today but not rainy, so I'm hoping to get out for some more walking.

  1. Groovy is a good way to describe the kitchen.

    1. We like it! Olga is very relaxed when she's asleep, but a bit anxious about her surroundings when she's awake.

  5. I love those mermaids! Fabulous Frida fabric. There’s a lot going on in that little kitchen. A lot of fun. Looking at that weather, I don’t think I’d want to get on a boat either.

    1. Yeah, it probably isn't a great time for the boat tour. I'll concede that.

  6. I love the colours of the fabrics and the kitchen is fabulous and I would love to have it in my house.

  7. I would have been with you in the boat for a journey out to see those forts. Very neat!

    1. Dave is probably right that in this weather it would be a bit much, but I'd love to do it sometime.

    1. It's kind of a strange combination, though -- Frida and Buddha?

  9. Fun, quirky and comfy decor with an ocean view sounds great to me. It looks like Olga approves of the couch and she's quite happy with her pink blanket.
Wind can be strong by the sea, but a walk dressed for the gales and ocean spray is still enjoyable.

  10. It's a fun and quirky place for a getaway. Hope the weather cooperates a bit so you can get out for some walks on the beach. Hope Dave is feeling better.

  11. What marvelous places you find to stay in. I can't believe that you packed Dave, Olga, suitcases and pineapples and forgot wine!! You must really need that break. Enjoy! And I wouldn't go out on a little boat in winter even without surgery, definitely team Dave here.

  13. Ummm...excuse me. I do believe you've fallen into MY vacation cottage. Try not to damage any of my precious textile Frida prints or mermaids. And make sure those backsplash tiles stay intact. They are precious to me.
Okay. Seriously? I obviously have a cosmic twin somewhere out in the universe who has decorated that little cabin.
    Enjoy!

  14. whoever decorated that place certainly likes a lot of color. the kitchen reminds me of the kitchen in the first place I lived that wasn't a dorm or home. it was a carriage house converted into an apartment and the kitchen was about half the size of the one where you are staying. the beach certainly looks gloomy; wet, cold, overcast, and windy.

  15. The mermaids are great. I really enjoy seeing the quirky decorations when we stay at short term rentals on vacation. Sometimes they are tacky, sometimes they are inspired, but the decor is almost always interesting.

    1. I guess when you don't have to live with it every day, you can afford to decorate with eccentricity.

  18. I know someone else mentioned it but there's REALLY a lot going on in that kitchen. Too bad about the furniture, (and the bed) but that is quite often the common denominator in rentals. Thx for the link to the Maunsell Forts, interesting. No surprise on the weather, it was blowing 60 with 80 mph gusts at St Andrews overnight....

  23. The struggle with the overflowing trash bin and the animals making a mess is definitely frustrating. It seems like you've found a creative solution with the coat hanger, but remembering to remove it for collection sounds like a challenge. Managing rubbish can sometimes feel like a never-ending task, but you handled it admirably

  24. I'd be happy to stay in a place where I can see Frida. Cuddling with Olga and her pink blankie would be a great way to nap.

  25. I love the mixed tiles on the walls there. The beach looks very cold, Brrr, I'd have to put my big old ski jacket on and then probably still stay inside. I don't blame Olga for wanting to stay on the couch. I've seen that Frida Kahlo as a framed picture here on the real estate sites, maybe it is just one picture that gets shared around for the viewing photos or maybe they have a bunch of them.
