A Dawn Meeting
Olga and I walked up the high street before dawn yesterday morning, giving me a chance to photograph one of our annual neighborhood Christmas trees. Weirdly, I ran into two of Dave's co-workers, a choral music teacher and her husband, who often substitutes. You don't expect to see people you know on the high street at 7 a.m. but we had a brief chat about our holidays.
It was a long-ish walk for Olga, who these days can barely be tempted to go beyond the omnipresent trash bags on the corner at the top of our street. I had a fantasy about walking her to the cemetery yesterday afternoon but she wouldn't go for it. I think our cemetery days are over -- we last went in October and before that, August. Hard to believe we used to go every week and sometimes twice in a weekend.
She still likes the garden, though -- always her first stop in the pre-dawn darkness.
This has been a rough couple of days for celebrity deaths, hasn't it? First Jimmy Carter, a statesman and man of principle if ever there was one; then Linda Lavin, of TV's "Alice," and then Olivia Hussey, Zeffirelli's Juliet. I once saw Lavin on Broadway, in "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife" in October 2000, and I even saved the cover of the program:
That artwork is by Roz Chast, one of The New Yorker's most popular cartoonists. In my journal at the time I called it "a really funny play" but I don't remember many details, except how excited I was to see Lavin in person, having watched "Alice" faithfully for years as a kid. I got a kick out of seeing Michelle Lee too, as a childhood fan of "Herbie the Love Bug."
As for Olivia Hussey, I've blogged before about going to see Zeffirelli's "Romeo and Juliet" with my 9th Grade English class. With that one role she made an indelible mark on many of us -- she's still the world's Juliet, the face many of us picture when we think of the play. (I picture her face and Leonard Whiting's behind. Well, OK, his face too.)
But the death that surprised me the most when I read about it yesterday was that of Troy Masters, a journalist and editor I knew in New York. We were both heavily involved in the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, and I was astonished and saddened to read that Troy died shortly before Christmas. I only knew him socially and hadn't been in touch with him in years -- except as passive Facebook friends -- but it still came as a shock. I wish I'd known he was living in LA. I would have tried to see him when Dave and I went in February. A missed opportunity.
And here we are at New Year's Eve. How did this happen already? Dave and I have no major plans to celebrate, except that he's getting his surgical staples out today, which I suppose is something. I will probably make a martini with some of our ancient vermouth and watch the "Happy New Year" episode of "Absolutely Fabulous," still one of my all-time favorites. We are such party animals!

Steve, I wish you and Dave a happy new year, a year of good health and happiness, and to Olga too of course.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you both and Olga. I shall probably be in bed by 10 as usual....unless by some miracle there is something on TV that I want to watch!
ReplyDeleteYou have bigger plans than we do for New Year’s Eve. We have no staples to be removed! Wishing you a happy night and a hopeful 2025.
ReplyDeleteEarly morning is a good time for photos.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the poster...Ethel Barrymore theatre.now there is another name...
Staples out will be a good start to the year.
Here's wishing you all a good one .
Yes - getting one's surgical staples out on New Year's Eve is a traditional ritual.
ReplyDeleteAs for Olga's mobility, have you thought of buying her a skateboard that you could pull along? Failing that - what about a baby's pram or pushchair? I have seen a good number of dogs being pushed around in those contraptions.
Olivia Hussey?? Oh no! She was the BEST Juliet and I have a dvd copy of that movie which I watch once a year. I'm glad to hear Olga walked a little further this morning. I like the Christmas Tree.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you all! Out before dawn? And meeting friends? that's amazing. Now I wonder if they were just coming home from a party..
ReplyDeleteI doubt we'll be celebrating any more than you -- a glass of Prosecco, maybe. Some movie or whatever. And probably checking out well before the ball drops in Times Square. We might be more on your clock than ours, or somewhere in between!
ReplyDeleteYes, it seems like so many of the "good ones" drop at the end of the year. I remember seeing Romeo and Juliet too -- it changed Shakespeare for so many. And Carter. Sigh.
Thanks for showing the lovely high street. I'm so glad Olga had a good walk. Meanwhile, three cheers for the staple removal! Sending all good wishes to the three of you for a lovely new year's eve and for the new year as well!
Staples out!!! Start the New Year with a bang!! That's something and it deserves a celebration.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you both, and to Miss Olga of course.
New Year's Eve has become such non-holiday for us. We'll be kept awake by the neighborhood fireworks, that will be something. There might be a gin and tonic or two.
ReplyDeleteA night at home with Ab Fab on NYE sounds...well, fabulous! :) Happy New Year Steve!
ReplyDeleteHope you guys enjoy your evening! I, sadly, have a party to go to tonight. There's no way at all that I'll stay until midnight though. I'll probably just drop by, eat some snacks, and then leave.
ReplyDeleteWith my husband still away in Tennessee, I'll be having a quiet evening with Maurice, the cat who hates everyone. I may make a martini too- NYE is as good an excuse as any, right?
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you that I fell so deeply in love with Olivia Hussey when MY 9th grade English class went to see the movie. To me, she was the absolute most radiant thing on the planet. And with this line, "It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night
Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear" I fell in love with Shakespeare, too.
It's always a shock to find out that someone we knew but haven't seen for awhile, has died. I'm sorry, Steve.
Well, you're ahead of me. I didn't realize that is was New Years Eve:) We usually have appetizers on New Years eve, but I forgot. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteStrangest thing I've read in awhile, "I think our cemetery days are over...". Too funny!
We've never been ones to go out on New Year's Eve. I probably won't even have a drink since I'll be consuming half a bottle of champaign tomorrow with brunch. Or I might. I'll have a panicked dog hiding in the closet and I might go sit out on the deck if neighbors are indulging in fireworks.
ReplyDeleteOlga has become a homebody. Happens to all of us.
I haven't done anything for New Year's Eve for many, many, many years - can't even remember when I did!?! Wishing you and Dave and Olga a New Year filled with good health, fun adventures, peace and joy!
ReplyDeleteThe New Year celebration will be a simple salmon dinner at my home. Just 4 of us and Caesar the dog. Will we make it to midnight? Maybe. The New Year is not the big deal it used to be.
ReplyDeleteA night at home on NYE is the best way to spend it. We'll be joining you.
ReplyDeleteI love the Christmas tree. I have a simple New Year's eve planned too. Just friends and some game playing and a glass or two of champagne.
ReplyDeleteI suppose Jimmy Carter's death was not really unexpected. He was a good man. Something that can't be said for the recent assortment of political characters. The other two were a surprise. I just saw a movie preview on Netflix with Linda Lavin in it and now I don't remember the movie's name.
Happy New Year to you, Dave & Olga
ReplyDeleteWendy (Wales)
Wishing you, Dave & Olga a new year of good health, joy, contentment, and peace.
ReplyDeleteI will stay in also with my boyfriend, younger daughter and her 17-month-old. Not a huge party animal these days! :) I've been expecting Jimmy Carter's death for a long time, yet when it happened, I felt bereft. Such a good and principled person and a huge loss to this world.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and Dave with many more to come.
ReplyDeleteWe have no plans for NYE. We've gotten together for food and games with the same two couples for decades, but one from each couple died this year. 😢
ReplyDeleteI missed seeing about Linda Lavin and Olivia Hussey. I always picture Hussey as Mary from the mini-series "Jesus of Nazareth", also directed by Zeffirelli. I always thought she was so beautiful.
Happy New Year to you, Dave, and Olga!
If only we could all celebrate the new year by having our surgical staples removed, then we would all know the meaning of joy. Can you believe I never saw that film of Romeo and Juliet? When it came out, I was too young to see it. Maybe I can find it on one of my streaming services. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
At the end of the year we sometimes take stock of things like you did with the loss of celebrities.
ReplyDeleteYes, that version of Romeo & Juliet was my intro to Shakespearean films too.
ReplyDeleteJimmy Carter sure sounds like a good human, the antithesis to the incoming shitpile. Sigh.
(Sorry about your friend.)
What a great idea to watch AB Fab on New Year's Eve. Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
